Being Human

I am very enthusiastic about the gallery’s current exhibition “Being Human”. It’s a duet between figurative artists Audrey Grant & Martyn McKenzie. It’s so good it’s heartbreaking. This exhibition means a lot to me. I believe that Audrey Grant could be our next great Scottish artist. I put her right up there with the greats like Barbara Rae and Joan Eardley.
I’m also so proud of 3rd year ECA student Martyn McKenzie. I’ve worked out why I am so taken by him as a person and his work. To me, he’s a symbol of hope for the future.

This photo was taken after the opening. It shows Martyn McKenzie on the left and artist Trevor Jones on the right. Martyn attended Trevor’s solo exhibition in November 2010 and so it was nice (and unsuprising) that Trevor returned the gesture. Martyn has a lot of respect for his peers, but it’s also great that those more established are so supportive of him. To me that’s such a special thing. That’s what it’s all about.

Delighted!

That 2010 went out on a high. The icing on the cake being that my painting “The Dunes, Yellowcraigs”, sold for an incredible amout at a charity auction just before Christmas. As usual I have no image to show you…must try harder!

So I’m feeling really goood about 2011 and raring to go. UNIONgallery exhibition calender is looking damn hot with some serious highlights along the way. I am particularly obsessed by this compelling image:

This is “Antonine Hill” by Philip Braham who’s solo exhibition will be during the Edinburgh Festival. If you’re lucky I might even let you see another image before the show opens.
Bloody amazing, I’m sure you will agree.

All the best for 2011.

Beautiful?

I recently attended “A Picture of Health”, a talk and exhibition of new works recently aquired by the excellent charity Art in Healthcare. One of my own pieces “Across The Water” was on display, which I donated to the charity earlier in the year.
A couple of people described the work as ‘beautiful’ and I immediately felt uncomfortable. It’s strange that I find it so easy (in fact I find it impossible not to) get enthusiastic about other artists work. However, when the attention is on my own work I actually find myself trying to steer the conversation onto anything else but my work.

Beautiful? Its a lovely compliment and I should be really grateful.
Anyway, a piece of work that I categorically think is above and beyond beautiful is Hannah Haworth’s “The Hunt” an installation currently on display at Union Gallery, Edinburgh.

For Your Viewing Pleasure II

It’s the second last day of Trevor Jones’s “Synaethesia II” exhibition. It’s been such a magical experience and I have enjoyed every minute of it and working with Trevor. As with all exhibitions I feel a little anxious about taking the work down soon. Quite simply I’m going to miss these paintings and the uplifting company of the artist behind them.
Earlier on I watched the following video in a bid to cheer myself up. It brought a smile to my face and I hope you enjoy it too……

CAN’T TOUCH THIS!

So Thursday 4th saw the opening of Trevor Jones’s exhibition “Synaesthesia II”. What a great night! It was well attended by a smashing crowd who were genuinely enthusiastic and supportive of the work.
There have been some really special exhibition openings at Union Gallery and this will go down as one of the highlights of 2010.

The whole evening was fun and busy from start to finish….very intense for Trevor. However, for me, the most poignant moment is captured below:

Artist Martyn McKenzie stays behind after the opening so he can have a serious discussion with Trevor about his work. I thought this was particularly special as Martyn is the youngest artist that shows at Union Gallery, but his passion and commitment is well beyond his years, matching the spirit of someone like Trevor. I found it touching that “wisdom and experience” was shared and graciously accepted between two brilliant artists.

Butterflies (in my tummy)

trevors studioFeeling both excited and nervous about abstract artist, Trevor Jones’s solo opening on Thursday. I also feel happy….an emotion never experienced prior to an opening before. I have good feelings about how his work will be received and it will joyful to see him get the success and recognition he deserves. He has worked solidly on this for over a year now. It seems like yesterday when we first talked about his show. Crumbs….I can’t believe it opens in 3 days!

This is an image from inside Trevor’s studio taken months ago. The use of tubs for mixing and thinning suggest painting on a hard core level!

we should look at this too

For your viewing pleasure

After posting artist Derek McGuires opening video, I thought you might like a look at this one too. This was another really great night with artists, gallery visitors and locals all having a good time. Had a real celebration feel to it……….

Grafting Hard

Due to my commitments with Union Gallery, Edinburgh I am currently working to commission only.
Please contact me to discuss proposals and ideas…..I enjoy a challenge!

In the meantime, have a look at this video my partner in crime Stewart Bremner made. It was the opening of artist Derek McGuire’s exhibition, “Ella Novo Loco”. Its fab…..and so is the exhibition.
